Strokes disappear on the greens through three putts, and three putts come from distance control. A fitted putter buys you distance control. It does not buy you a stroke.

Head mass against the greens you actually putt on
This is the first decision and it is the one almost nobody has ever had made deliberately. A heavier head suits slower greens because it carries more energy for the same stroke length, which means you accelerate less to reach the hole. A lighter head suits fast greens for exactly the inverse reason.
Public greens around Milwaukee tend to run somewhere between eight and ten on the stimp through most of the season, and rather slower in early spring and late autumn when growth is slow and the ground is cold. That points a lot of local golfers towards more head mass than they are currently using, because stock putters are increasingly built for tournament speeds.
Three hundred and twenty through four hundred grams sits in the test library, in twenty gram steps, and adjustable sole weights let us go finer than that once the range is narrowed.
Length, and the squat almost everybody is doing
Stock putters are thirty-four or thirty-five inches, and a large share of golfers are not built for either. A putter that is too long forces the hands in towards the body, lifts the toe, and pushes the eyes inside the ball line. The compensation is a squat that nobody would hold voluntarily for four hours, and yet people hold it for a decade.
We set length from your natural posture rather than the other way round. Stand as you would stand, let the arms hang, and the correct length falls out of that. It is frequently thirty-three inches or shorter, and cutting an existing putter down is a cheap fix that changes head mass, which brings us straight back to the first decision.
Lie angle and eye line
With the length right, lie angle follows so the sole sits flat at address. A toe-up putter pulls start direction left, a heel-up putter pushes it right, and both are invisible to the golfer holding the club. Impact tape on the sole settles it in about four strokes.
Eye position over the ball gets checked with a mirror and a laser line. Directly over, slightly inside, or well inside are all workable positions, but the putter has to be built to whichever one you naturally adopt. Fighting your own eye line is the fastest route to an inconsistent start direction.
Toe hang against your stroke arc
We record the stroke arc before touching the head. A stroke with a strong arc generally does better with meaningful toe hang, and a stroke that runs close to straight back and through does better with a face balanced head. This is the one part of putter fitting that has become common knowledge, and it is still worth measuring rather than assuming, because plenty of golfers have an arc they do not believe they have.
Grip size, and the thing it actually does
Larger putter grips reduce how much the hands can rotate through the stroke. For a golfer whose miss is a closing face, that is genuinely useful. For a golfer who relies on feel in the fingertips for distance control, an oversized grip can cost more in lag putting than it gains in face control.
So we test it rather than defaulting to the current fashion. Grip choice comes last in this session and it is the easiest thing to change afterwards if the season proves us wrong.
